The 20th press briefing of SCIO on Sichuan Earthquake

Beijing, May 30, 2008--The 20th press conference on " the acceptance, allocation and supervision of donations for earthquake relief"  was held at 4 p.m., Friday by the State Council Information Office.


According to the Ministry of Civil Affairs, as of Friday noon,  the death toll in China's major earthquake increased to 68858. 366586 people were injured and 18618 missed in the 8.0-magnitude quake that jolted southwestern Sichuan Province on May 12. 15146840 people were relocated. Totally, 45547565 people were affected by the strong earthquake.


As of Thursday noon, donations from home and abroad to China's quake-hit regions had reached 39.924 billion yuan, and so far, 10.672 billion yuan had been forwarded to the earthquake-affected areas.664500 tents were delievered to the earthquake-affected areas.

From Thursday noon to Friday noon, 172 aftershocks measuring below 3.9 on the Richter scale had been monitored in southwest China's Sichuan Province, and 2 afterquakes measuring between 4.0 to 4.9 on the Richter scale had been monitored, and totally 9304 aftershocks had been monitored in Sichuan Province, according to the China Seismological Bureau.

As of Friday noon, 88617 people injured in the quake were hospitalized, 58356 have left hospitals, 13828 were still in hospitals, and 8668 people were delivered to other provincesaccording to the Ministry of Health.


As of Friday noon, 22.417 bil yuan earmarked for disaster relief was allocated by governments at all levels, among which 18.14 bil yuan was from the central government and 4.277 bil yuan was from the local governments, according to the Ministry of Finance.

As of Thursday, 3400 makeshift shelters were built in quake-hit areas in Sichuan Province, 6300 makeshift shelters were being built, 15700 makeshift shelters were to be built, 23500 were on the way and 35700 were to be delivered, according to the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development.
