Remarks by Ambassador Jiang Jiang at the Chinese Bridge Chinese Language Proficiency Competition in Malta
2018/04/29

Teachers of the Chinese language,

Young students.

Dear friends,

Welcome to the Chinese Embassy.

It's a pleasure to have you here for the Chinese Bridge Chinese Language Proficiency Competition in Malta.

Language is an important tool for communication and a carrier of culture.

Recent years have seen a boom of learning the Chinese language worldwide. I am particularly pleased that such boom is also growing in Malta.

This development, as I see it, is due to the appeal of the Chinese culture and language, and to China's new era and new look following its four decades of reform and opening-up. In the case of Malta, the growing public interest in learning and speaking Chinese is also a strong indication of the robust relations between two countries.

Those of you who are learning Chinese must have begun to appreciate how beautiful the Chinese language can be. Its characters look like pictures, its reading sounds like music, and its expressions are very much poetic. It is a language that is concise, expressive and coherent.

For example, among all UN documents in its six official languages, the Chinese text is always the shortest.

Chinese characters are the oldest continuously used system of writing in the world. Its use has never been interrupted.

As you may be aware, a Chinese high school student can easily read and understand Chinese classic works of literature and history written by our ancestors some 2,000 years ago, and can appreciate the thinking of ancient Chinese scholars and sages.

The Chinese language is a living and innovative language, always keeping in step with the times. Through a combination of existing individual characters, one can easily come up with trendy catchwords or new expressions befitting the new context of rapid social development. They are easy to remember and understand.

China and Malta both have a long history and splendid civilization. The Chinese and Maltese people have developed a profound friendship through long-standing exchanges.

China-Malta relationship is now at a new historic point where we see good opportunities to make it even stronger.

The Chinese language is widely believed to be a bridge of mutual learning between the East and West. It may well serve as a bridge for heart-to-heart communication and friendship between our two peoples and a means for promoting mutual understanding and mutual appreciation between our two countries.

I do hope the Maltese youth, through learning the Chinese language, will get to know more about China's 5,000-year-old civilization, and develop a better understanding of China's endeavor to build a modern socialist country that is strong, prosperous, democratic, culturally advanced, harmonious and beautiful.

I also hope that my Maltese colleagues and young friends will seize the opportunities for cooperation under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative, and play a more active role in promoting China-Malta friendly exchanges. Let us work together for an even brighter future of our bilateral relations.

With that, I wish today's event a great success and wish each and every participant an outstanding performance.

Thank you all.
