Ambassador Jiang Jiang's Remarks at the Opening Ceremony of Exhibition of Guizhou Intangible Cultural Heritage

11th September 2017

Vice Governor Mr. He Li,

Distinguished Guests,

Ladies and Gentlemen:

Good evening. It is my pleasure to attend the opening ceremony of Exhibition of Guizhou Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Guizhou is situated in southeast of China. It has a long history, a unique ethnic culture and beautiful natural environment. Over two millennia ago, the ancient Tea-Horse Road across the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau linked Guizhou to the outside world. Guizhou has its distinctive cultural diversity as a home to 17 ethnic groups accounting for 37% of its total population. Guizhou is abundant in resources of rivers and mountains. With its forest coverage rate reaching 52%, it is acclaimed as “the Province of Parks”. Today, harnessing the opportunity of Belt and Road Route and its own geographical advantage, Guizhou is becoming a new force in China’s bid for reform and opening-up. In July 2014, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat visited Guizhou and attended the Eco Forum Global Annual Conference in Guiyang. This forum has now become an important platform for China’s opening-up.

In the following two months, artists from Guizhou will exhibit a collection of 130 items of handicrafts, including embroidery, silver accessories, wax dyeing and wood carving, in a full display of the richness of intangible cultural heritage and exotic glamour of ethnicity. We warmly welcome Maltese friends to join us in this exhibition and exchange ideas with artists from Guizhou so as to get an insight of Guizhou and a more comprehensive understanding of China.

On the occasion of the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Malta, I hope this exhibition will enhance mutual understanding and friendship between our two peoples and facilitate the people-to-people and cultural exchanges between us.

I wish to conclude by wishing the event a complete success!

        Thank you.
