Commenting on the excellent bilateral relations since 1972, Dr. Louis Galea spoke highly of Chinese foreign policy of treating every country equally regardless of size or population. Dr. Galea, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, made the statement when Ambassador Zhang Keyuan paid a courtesy call on the Honourable Speaker in Valletta on 22 Sep., 2009.

Dr. Galea expressed his wish to further parliamentarian exchanges with the National People’s Congress of China and emphasized that Malta will work with China to promote the development of Sino-EU relations and the Middle East peace process.

Ambassador Zhang conveyed warm greetings from Mr. Wu Bangguo, Chairman(Speaker) of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of China. Mr. Zhang noted China's relations with Malta have been running smoothly and healthily for the last 37 years, so much so that it could be viewed as an equal partnership between the two countries. Ambassador Zhang promised that he would do his best to push the mutual beneficial relations to a new level.
