Ambassador Yu Dunhai Delivers a Speech on China's Poverty Eradication Achievements

On 7th April 2021, H.E. Ambassador Yu Dunhai delivered a speech on China's poverty eradication achievements under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, on the occasion of the launch of a series of micro-documentaries entitled "Better Tourism, Better Life, Better world" and Photo Exhibition on Poverty Alleviation by Tourism in China by the China Cultural Centre in Malta. Ambassador Yu said:

Poverty is an issue plaguing global development and governance. The Communist Party of China always regard as our goal the people's aspirations to live a better life. It is our solemn commitment to the people and history that no one will be left behind on the march to a moderately prosperous society.

In February 2021, at a gathering to mark accomplishments in poverty eradication, Chinese President Xi Jinping declared a "complete victory" in the fight against poverty. Absolute poverty, which has haunted the Chinese nation for thousands of years, is now a thing of the past.

China has lifted 770 million rural residents out of poverty since the beginning of the reform and opening-up over 40 years ago, accounting for more than 70 percent of the global total. China has met the poverty eradication target set in the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development 10 years ahead of schedule. China's achievement of eradicating extreme poverty is a miracle that shall go down in history. In the meantime, China has actively carried out international cooperation on poverty eradication, fulfilling our responsibility and contributing to the building of a community of shared future for mankind.

Green development has a rich historical and cultural root in China, where harmonious co-existence is part and parcel of China's efforts towards the development of an ecological civilization. As President Xi put it, lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets. Poverty alleviation through tourism has become a key factor in boosting economic development of rural areas. This model has helped rural people get rid of poverty while playing an important role in the revitalization of rural villages and achieving green development, injecting steady driving forces for China's poverty eradication.

Recently, the China Cultural Centre in Malta has launched a series of micro-documentaries entitled "Better Tourism, Better Life, Better world" and Photo Exhibition on Poverty Alleviation by Tourism in China on its social platforms, which highlights China's poverty eradication achievements and its contribution to the global effort. We are glad to share with our Maltese friends the stories and experience of poverty alleviation through tourism in China so that you can have a more comprehensive understanding of the country and the governance philosophy of the Communist Party of China.

Thank you.
