Remarks by Ambassador Jiang Jiang at the Gala Evening Celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival and the 15th Anniversary of China Cultural Centre in Malta

Your Excellency Madame President,

Distinguished guests,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Let me begin by thanking Your Excellency for honouring us with your presence.

The Mid-autumn Day is one of the most important traditional festivals in China. It is a time when all family members get together. Tonight, we are delighted to celebrate this festival with our Maltese friends here at the Pjazza Teatru Rjal. Immersed in the atmosphere of joy and togetherness, we feel very much at home.

This year’s Mid-autumn Day coincides with many festive events. Yesterday marked the 54th anniversary of the independence of Malta. In about a week’s time, we will be celebrating the 69th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Over the decades, both China and Malta have made remarkable achievements in developing their countries and improving the livelihood of the people. In the past 46 years since the establishment of diplomatic ties, China-Malta relationship has set a good example of harmonious co-existence between countries different in size, population, cultural tradition and political system. Today, China-Malta cooperation is blessed with important opportunities and vast potential. We should work together and become partners that enjoy political trust, engage in mutually-beneficial cooperation, learn from each other in the cultural field and support each other in international affairs. We should make full use of the Belt and Road initiative and make it a new platform for all-round China-Malta cooperation, thus elevating our relations to a new high.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

This year marks the 15th anniversary of the establishment of the China Cultural Centre in Malta. Fifteen years ago, under the auspices of leaders of both countries, China Cultural Centre was established in Valletta, which was one of the first Chinese cultural centres in Europe. In the past 15 years, the Centre has organized many cultural activities, including flagship events such as Happy Chinese New Year in Valletta, World Taichi Day and Chinese Film Day. These events have been warmly received by Maltese people.. Through such activities, the Centre has become an important bridge for China-Malta friendship, playing an active role in promoting cultural exchanges and cooperation and bringing the people of China and Malta closer to each other. I wish to take this opportunity to extend, on behalf of the Chinese Embassy in Malta, our sincere congratulations on the 15th anniversary of the Centre. I also wish the Centre greater success and fresh contribution to our cultural exchanges.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

This is the third time that I celebrate the Mid-autumn festival in Malta. In the past two years, the Shaolin Kunfu and the Guizhou ethnic song and dance impressed the Maltese audience with their breathtaking performances. Tonight, we are very happy to have with us artists from the Fujian Art Troupe. Fujian Province is located on the southeast coast of China. It is where the ancient maritime silk road started. As we bask in the Mid-autumn moonlight, let’s trace the footsteps of our ancestors, embrace the spirit of the Silk Road and open a new chapter of Belt and Road cooperation between China and Malta.

In conclusion, I wish all of you a very happy Mid-autumn Festival.

Thank you.
