Remarks by H.E. Jiang Jiang,Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Malta at the National Day Reception
2017/09/29

Your Excellency President Coleiro Preca and Mr. Preca,

Distinguished Guests,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

A warm welcome to you all! I am so happy that you have joined us today in the Garden of Serenity, a place in classical Chinese architectural style, to celebrate the 68th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

Through pioneering effort by the Chinese people over the past 68 years and thanks to the policy of reform and opening-up over the past 39 years, China has gone through tremendous change and taken on a new look. Time has witnessed China’s extraordinary journey of transformation.

People’s essential needs have been met. In fact, China has provided for the world’s 20% population with just 10% of the global arable land and 6% of the world’s fresh water. Today’s China stands as the second largest economy, top trading nation, and third largest source of foreign direct investment.

We have put an end to conflict and dire poverty at home, and we have been following the path of socialism with Chinese features suited to our own national conditions. We are adapting to the new normal in economic development and modernizing the way the country is governed. All these endeavors have put us closer to realizing the goal of national renewal than ever before.

Being an active player in the international system, China has made its important contribution to global peace and prosperity. China calls for developing a new type of international relations featuring win-win cooperation, a global network of partnerships that choose dialogue over confrontation, partnership over alliance, and China has contributed its solutions to the reform of the global governance system and settlement of regional and global hotspot issues.

Over the past year, the world has seen China set new records in various fields. The C919, the first large passenger aircraft China independently built, had its successful maiden flight. The first quantum computer in the world was built. The Jiaolong manned submersible reached the deepest point in global sea dive. And the first test exploitation of natural gas hydrate was successfully carried out. The truth is, innovation is becoming a key engine driving China’s economic growth and social development.

Committed to the diplomatic tradition of contributing to the common good of mankind, China has taken concrete actions to advance global development and common interests. The Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation China hosted last May is a case in point. The Forum has helped inject impetus into global growth, boost confidence in economic globalization and explore a path to building a community of shared future for mankind. China’s call for openness, inclusiveness and win-win cooperation has been welcomed by more and more countries in the world.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

This year marks the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Malta. The past 45 years have witnessed the growth of our traditional friendship and bilateral ties. We are ready to continue to work with the government and people of Malta to deepen mutual political trust, expand win-win cooperation, and solidify our traditional friendship. We will intensify our good cooperation in implementing the consensus reached at the leadership level to keep our relationship on the right track and deliver greater benefits to our two countries and peoples.

China sees Malta as a good friend and good partner in the European Union. We offer Malta our warm congratulations on its successful EU Presidency in the first half of this year. Harnessing the opportunity of Valletta 2018, we look forward to even closer people-to-people exchange and stronger relations between China and Malta, and between China and the EU.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The Communist Party of China will soon convene its 19th National Congress in Beijing in this golden season of autumn. This will be a very important meeting held at a time when China reaches a decisive stage of completing the building a moderately prosperous society in all respects and a key phase in the development of socialism with Chinese features. With its reform and development at a new starting point, China will set on a new journey toward greater achievements, bringing even more opportunities to Malta and countries around the world.

Let me conclude by proposing a toast,

to the 68th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China,

to the health of President Coleiro Preca and Mr. Preca, and all guests present,

and to the friendship between China and Malta.
