On 29th October 2021, H.E. Ambassador Yu Dunhai met with Speaker Emeritus and Former Foreign Minister Michael Frendo.

Ambassador Yu appreciated Mr. Frendo’s contribution to the bilateral relations during his tenure. He said China attaches great importance to China-EU relations and always sees Europe as an important pole in this multi-polar world. Based on the principle of mutual respect and seeking common ground while shelving differences, China and the EU should adhere to the keynote of mutual benefits and win-win outcomes to enhance cooperation in various fields. China and Malta enjoy enduring friendship and support each other’s core interests and major concerns. Both countries should take the opportunity of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties to lead the bilateral relations to a new level.

Mr. Frendo spoke highly of China’s achievement on social economic development and poverty alleviation. He said that he has witnessed the long-lasting Malta-China friendship and looks forward to better political relations and more people-to-people cooperation. The EU always seeks to develop its strategic autonomy. He expects China to increase engagement with the EU on various issues such as Covid-19 treatment and climate change.
